Wahrenbrock’s, for half a century a comforting and reliable downtown presence, was one the country’s great used bookstores. When the doors slammed shut last summer, it was surprising (there was no warning), though long dreaded (bookstores have been dropping off the map for years) and odd (there was no going-out-of-business sale).

Sad end to a local institution in San Diego. It had closed its doors last summer and now the carrion is being picked off the bones.
